The sad part about being a guitar blogger is that you occasionally have to report a death of an artist. Richie Havens, known for his captivating Woodstock performance of his trademark song Freedom is dead. He died of a heart attack, which came suddenly, at home.
In all honesty, I don’t know much about Richie Havens. But I will always remember me trying to play ‘Freedom’ and realizing, wow, this is much harder than it looks. First of all, barring all strings with your thumb proved to be impossible for me. But even putting that part aside, the way he approached the guitar rhythmically was just wicked, just so unique.
From his official website, I learned that Mr. Havens had just retired 3 years ago, after a 40 year fulfilling career as a performer.
Godspeed, Richie Havens.
