I can’t believe I forgot to mention this in the video version of my Vibe Strings Review, but these high-quality acoustic guitar strings are actually made in USA. Fran, the owner of Vibe Strings contacted me a couple of weeks ago via an email. I was offered a free set of Vibe Strings for test and review purposes. Now, to be clear, I’ve been playing and teaching guitar for over 25 years now. But I was never one of those guitarists who paid a lot of attention to what type or brand of strings they play. I know some of my friends – as well as many of the professional guitarists – are super picky when it comes to that topic, and swear by only using a certain type of string. So, while I don’t consider myself a guitar string expert, I can certainly reasonably assess whether or not a string is “good” or “bad”. There are some distinct factors that even I notice when I put on a new set of string on my instrument. But ultimately it really comes down to things like playability, sound and durability. And before I go into more detail, I can already share with you that Vibe Strings has managed to fully convinced me in all three categories. Vibe Strings exclusively distribute their products via amazon. For now, their focus is on acoustic guitar strings. They over several versions such as light, extra-light, medium and heavy. The set I opted for is the medium gage (.012, .016, .024, .032, .042, .052). All strings came in their individual wrapper. I could tell right away that something was different about them, they felt sturdier and heavier. It’s difficult to describe but especially the low E-String and the A-String seemed to be thicker – even though I’m pretty sure that they are in terms of thickness not any different other brands. Anyway, they were easy to install and just as easy to tune. This is an important point. If you have been playing guitar for a while, then you know that cheap strings are harder to tune and that they don’t hold the tuning. Not an easy with Vibe Strings – I put them on, tuned them and fine-tuned one more time the next day. That was it.
As I started playing three things stood out to me: they are noticeably louder. Well, at least to my ears. I will have to say that I don’t have the instruments to conduct a test to ascertain whether they actually are louder than other strings, but they certainly sounded louder to me. Secondly, the sustain is outstanding. You hit the string and it produces a consistent and crisp sound that’s long lasting. Lastly, the strings feel good. It is hard to describe, but I’ve been playing strings that just didn’t work for me, they felt ‘dull’. The Vibe Strings though have just enough grip but also allow for easy slides up and down the neck.
According to their website, Vibe Strings has been in business for over 40 years. As I said, they manufacture in the USA. They are very confident in their products and apparently, they even over a replacement guarantee. But either way, I am very satisfied and I will absolutely continue to use them. Actually, I want to get myself a set of the heavy gauge strings for my dobro. I have a feeling that those might work very well on my resonator guitar for slide guitar playing.
