The Best Way To Learn Guitar Online For YOU

learn to play guitar onlineYes, things can get a little overwhelming on the Internet. On one hand, I think it’s great that there are so many things people can learn from resources available on the World-Wide-Web. But let’s be honest – at least in my opinion, the vast majority of the information you can find there on any specific topic is suboptimal, to say the least. You never know what’s going to happen by clicking on a link, but more often than not, you’ll end up with something that doesn’t really help at all. Or worse, you think it’s something that could be worth spending money on, but then it turns out to be worthless (or a scam!). And the exact same is true when people simply want to find out what is the best way to learn guitar online.

In the following article, you will find a lot of information which is primarily based on my experience as a guitar teacher, guitar player and owner of the websites and The goal is to help you weeding out the nonsense. Ultimately, I want you to be in a position to look at a few reputable and trustworthy resources that have been proven to be highly efficient and affordable “Learn To Play Guitar Online” resources. Further to that, at the end of this article, I will share one specific recommendation of an online guitar learning program with you, that I can wholeheartedly vouch for.

As mentioned, you will be looking at this from several different angles. This is important, because whenever it comes to questions like “What is the best” there is usually not just one, but many considerable and viable options. It all depends on what’s best for YOU! Which might be different from what’s best for another person.

To make all this a little bit more digestible for you, here is an overview of what you will find in this article. You can jump to the section of your choice by simply clicking on the respective bookmark below. However, please make sure that you read the entire article and watch the video, BEFORE you go ahead and make any decision and potentially waste money on a bogus or mediocre “Learn How To Play The Guitar Online – In 3 Days Only!”. By the way, something like that should immediately raise a red flag, but I’ll explain that later on. For now, here’s what we will be discussing to get you started:

1. Guitar Learning Online – What You Need To Know
2. Online Guitar Learning Methods – An Evaluation
3. Money Wasted – Don’t Do That!

1. Guitar Learning Online – What You Need To Know

I will presume that you already made a decision and landed on that you want to learn how to play guitar online and not via another method. Therefore, I don’t want to spend too much time on the non-online learning approached – however, I do want to make just a couple of points that I’d like you to keep in the back of your mind. This is not to sway you into a specific direction, but just in case that at later point you may want to consider other options, too.

The Pros and Cons of taking face-to-face lessons

1:! vs. Online Guitar LessonsI’m a strong proponent of online guitar lessons, don’t get me wrong. But let me just say this one time, because I think it’s important to at least acknowledge the following: strictly from a learning efficiency perspective, taking face-to-face lessons from a qualified teacher is the best out of all options. Why? Because a good teacher will guide you, correct you, provide you feedback, scrutinize your progress, scold you (well, hopefully not!), encourages you, etc. That’s just an important realization and something to keep in mind. Now, with that being said, it is also by far the most expensive method and in most cases comes with a whole host of other concerns, such as an inflexible schedule and logistical hassle (meeting up with the teacher at a specific location).

And that’s exactly why learning to play guitar online is such an attractive alternative to the more traditional ‘taking guitar lessons from a teacher’ method. In case you’re interested, check out my video below where I evaluated all methods to learn guitar in detail.

You will ALWAYS have to practice!

You may not want to hear this, but it is the truth. Others will tell you that if you buy their ‘Learn to play the guitar online’ product, they will show you a way to learn the instrument with practically no practice at all. Or, if you sign-up for whatever they have to offer, you can learn guitar in your sleep!

That is, with all due respect, complete and utter NON-SENSE!

To be very clear and I’ve been saying that over and over: I don’t mean to discredit any reputable guitar teacher or guitar learning course. They do exist. Two good examples are Justin and Marty, you might have seen some of their videos already. Those two are great teachers and genuinely interested in helping people to learn to play the guitar online. And I’m not trying to sound self-gratifying, but I’d like to add my own free Beginners Guitar Course to this category, too.

Here is the truth, and any reputable guitar teacher will attest to that: You Need to PRACTICE! Without you sitting down and putting in the work, you cannot learn to play the instrument, irrespectively of what guitar learning approach you take. You can work with the best teacher in the world, you can buy the best guitar learning DVD set, or you can choose from the many online options – one fact always remains the same: it won’t work if you’re not willing to put in the effort.

I know, what you just heard me saying might not exactly be what you wanted to hear. However, I think it’s important that somebody just says it how it is. Or would you rather have me trying to convince you that if you sign-up for this or that online program you will learn guitar over-night? Probably not. So, sorry for being the messenger, but it is what it is.

Now, the good news is, if you are willing to put in the work, there are some very good options available to show you how to learn guitar online. Two of which I will share with you later. However, before we go there, let’s try to figure out what type of person YOU are. Sounds weird, right? Well, what I’m trying to do is the following: look at all the different online guitar learning options AND at your personal preference regarding your learning style.

2. Online Guitar Learning Methods – An Evaluation

Let’s keep this section straight forward. Yes, there are so many different online options, methods, programs and courses, but in the following, I narrowed things down for you. Admittedly, by focusing on the what I believe three best ways to learn guitar online, we may omit other good alternatives. I haven’t tested all online offers out there, but out of the ones I did, these three are the ones that make most sense to me, all my students as well as the folks who follow me online.

We are talking about YouTube, the Beginners Guitar Course and Jamplay.

You could obviously go ahead now and just check all three of them. But that wouldn’t make too much sense because we only looked at one part of the equation, which are the learning options. But remember, we also need to look at you and your learning style in order to figure out what is going to work best for you.

Who are you and how to you learn best?

How about this – I will create four ‘imaginary’ guitar beginners. They all have different personalities and living situations. Let’s call them Jill, Jane, John and Jim. While they are all different, they have one thing in common, which is the desire to learn to play the guitar online.

Let me introduce each of them to you:

Jill: Jill just got promoted to Senior Director in her corporation. She’s been on a fast-track with respect to her job and career. She’s single, makes very good money, but has practically no time for herself, let alone anybody else.

Jane: Jane is a stay-at-home mom with three kids. She wears the pants at home at Jane is known for her strong personality and ‘I can do it’ attitude. Being in charge of the family budget, Jane managed to put a little bit aside for her new project, learning the guitar, but only if absolutely necessary.

John: John is about to retire from his job in Finance. He likes structure, discipline and works/learns best by following clear instructions. He doesn’t like to waste time on trying to figure things out on his own. He’s frugal (hey, he’s in Finance!) and always makes sure he gets his money’s worth!

Jim: Jim is in college and to make ends meet, he works part-time. He’s pretty flexible regarding his schedule. Determined to figure out what’s the best way to learn acoustic guitar online, he figured out that he needs some guidance in getting started with the whole thing. Ideally, it shouldn’t cost anything or at least not very much.

Alright, so we have three online guitar learning options and four guitar beginners. Based on their short bios above, let’s find out what learning option would make most sense for each of them (rated with a “1”, which ones could be an alternative (rated with a “2”) and lastly, the one that I would view as a ‘last resort’ option only.

comparing guitar learning programs

For Jill, Jamplay would make the most sense. She can take the lessons at her convenience. Alternatively, the Beginners Guitar Course could be a good option, but she always likes to think about ‘what’s next’. Therefore, Jamplay with its many different guitar online learning programs across all levels and genres is really a no-brainer.

Jane is more or less the polar opposite. The last thing she needs is anyone telling her how to do things. She doesn’t mind figuring things out herself, she’s used to that. So, pulling bits and pieces together on YouTube is right up her alley and even better, it doesn’t cost her a dime. The free Beginners Guitar Course could be a second option, but she would have to put up with me as her teacher. Even though this course was voted in the Top 5 for best online guitar lessons for beginners and while I’m known to be fairly easy-going, I do scrutinize over my students’ progress to get them the best results. And let’s face it, Jane wouldn’t like that.

As for John, there really only is one viable option, which is Jamplay. Structured lessons, methodical teaching from highly qualified teachers at a ridiculously low price is perfect for him.

Jim, on the other hand, might want to take a look at the Beginners Guitar Course first, because it’s free. He could then decide whether it he likes it or not. If not, he could always check out Jamplay because based on his research, he knows that they are they rank highest when it comes to how to learn guitar online AND their flexible learning packages are remarkably affordable.

I realize your personal situation might not be 100% identical to any of the scenarios we just discussed. But can you find yourself somewhere in there? If yes, well, then I think this was probably very helpful. If not, then just try to think about how you typically learn best. Do you prefer structure and guidance or would you rather take off on your own and figure things out by yourself? Either way is fine, there is no right or wrong here.

BUT, there are certain things that you MUST NOT DO! Unless you don’t care about throwing money out of the window or getting frustrated with things that just can’t work. Let’s look at a few of those so you know what to stay away from.

3. Money Wasted – Don’t Do That!

I will not name any specific individuals or companies here. It won’t be necessary because there is one simple litmus test you can apply in order to find out whether or not an ‘offer’ is something worthwhile exploring:

Is this too good to be true?

Does this defy common sense and logic?

Well, if the answer is yes to one or both of these questions, you know that you better stay away from it. Or how would you feel if I was to tell you that I just invented a new method that allows you to learn to speak a new language fluently in just 10 days? Or what about my new book on ‘5 proven ways to get rich in your sleep’?

I didn’t think so. The same applies to anything along the lines of learning guitar online. If it doesn’t make sense, then, well, it doesn’t make sense.

4. Recommendation: Best Way To Learn Guitar Online
