John Lennon’s Guitar Auctioned Off For $2.4 Million

John Lennon 1962 J-160E GibsonGuitars can be expensive as we all know. But I guess if an instrument was played by a Beatles founding member, in this case Mr. John Lennon, an interested buyer should have really deep pockets. Well, and I guess some do. Because the beautiful 1962 J-160E Gibson acoustic that used during the recording of classics such as “She Loves You” and “I Want To Hold Your Hand” has a new owner, who was willing and able to plunk down $2.4 Million.

This was a welcomed surprise to the auction house, which had estimated a mere $600,000 to $800,000 selling price and maybe due to the fact that the guitar had vanished for 50 years during a concert in 1963. Either way, considering that Lennon bought this instrument in 1962 for a measly £161, this Gibson likely sets a record for the most value-appreciating guitar in history. Do I know that for a fact? No, just speculating here.

Anyway, congrats to the new owner. I wonder how much it is to get an instrument like that insured. And where do you keep something like that? Hanging on the wall in your house? I think I couldn’t resist but just playing it which could be considered blasphemous, I guess.
