1. The Songs We Will Learn Today

As I said, we will focus on a total of 7 easy beginner guitar songs. I didn’t use any specific criteria to pick these tunes other than making sure that you can play all of them with a few basic chords. Some of those pieces are old traditionals, others are more modern pop songs. Just a little bit of everything to get you some variety.

Alright, here is what we will be covering in today’s lesson “Easy Guitar Songs For Beginners“:

1. My Bonnie Is Over The Ocean
2. This Land Is Your Land
3. Hello (Adele)
4. Bad Moon Rising
5. House Of The Rising Sun
6. Amazing Grace
7. Teardrops On My Guitar
8. Bonus: Easy Strumming Pattern

I threw in a Bonus Lesson where I introduce you to a very easy guitar strumming pattern that’s perfect for songs like ‘Teardrops on my guitar’ by Taylor Swift and other good beginner guitar songs.

You don’t have to follow the order above – just pick any song of your choice to get started. However, to get the most out of this super-lesson, try to tackle all seven tunes, even those which might be a little bit more of a challenge, such as House of the Rising Sun – that one has the dreaded F-Chord, yes! But, if you’ve been avoiding to play that chord for now, let’s change that today, okay?

Alright, before we get started with our beginner guitar songs, let’s make sure you’re actually ready and good to go.

2. Getting Ready

easy guitar songs for beginnersWell, I guess I’m stating the obvious here, but you will need a guitar to follow along with this lesson. Let’s not worry about what kind of guitar. Anyone you have available is fine, as long as it’s playable and tuned. You can use a guitar pick, of course – if you don’t have a pick, use your thumb or hand for strumming. In case you’re using an electric guitar with an amplifier, I recommend to play these songs in the clean channel. Not just because it’s more conducive to the type of tunes we are learning today, but it also requires you to play more accurately – distortion and gain can mask mistakes an inaccuracies to some extent.

3. The Chords We Need

It wouldn’t make sense to just provide you with a list of all the chords we need today. Instead, you will learn the chords as we learn the songs. That just much easier that way. However, while in some of the video tutorials I do introduce the chords needed, I don’t do that in others because I assume you can already play them. So, what if there’s a chord we need that you don’t know yet? Not a problem, that’s why we have our Guitar Chordbank, our favorite Guitar Chord Finder video library. Let’s say there’s a chord we need for a tutorial that you don’t know how to play – you just go over to the Chordbank and click on the link of that respective chord. A short video will launch wherein I explain to you what you need to do with both of your hands to play that chord. Additionally, you can also request my List of all Guitar Chords. It’s a super comprehensive chord chart document – and yes, it’s free of course. Just send me an email and it will get sent to you right away.

4. Video Lesson: 7 Beginner Songs For Guitar

So far so good, let’s dive into our guitar beginner songs. Below is a playlist with all 7 video tutorials in one place. Alternatively, just click on the links below to get a little bit more context around each song and – for some of the tunes – to download a worksheet that will help you to practice and learn today’s beginners guitar songs.

1. My Bonnie Is Over The Ocean
This is one is super easy to learn. All you need is three chords, A-Major, D-Major and G-Major. An ideal tune to get started and warmed-up.

2. This Land Is Your Land
This was one of the very first beginner acoustic guitar songs that I ever learned. Back then, video wasn’t available, so I had to rely on books and weird wobbly vinyl discs. Anyway, another piece that you can learn in no time.

3. Hello (Adele)
Well, I guess this one doesn’t need any further introduction. Yet another Adele smash hit and even I like it. Actually, I liked it enough to do a guitar tutorial on it, so there you go.

4. Bad Moon Rising
This one is the first song my students learn in the Beginners Guitar Course. This is also the first song where my students hear me singing – or let’s put it this way: it is supposed to be singing but it doesn’t sound like it (this is my way of saying that I can’t sing, I’m sure you figured that…). But, good thing I’m teaching guitar and not vocals. And, it’s yet another great example of the many beginner songs on guitar that anyone can learn fast.

5. House Of The Rising Sun
Alright, this popular song is a little bit more challenging. Not just because you will need to F-Bar Chord. The chord changes require some practice. On the other hand, it’s well worth it because it’s a timeless classic and it just lends itself to be played on guitar.beginner songs for guitar

6. Amazing Grace
A beautiful traditional that can be played in many ways on guitar. In our lesson today, we will be doing the ‘easy acoustic guitar songs for beginners’ version. I simplified it a little bit, without compromising the spirit of the song. Also, in the second part of the video tutorial, I show you how to play the melody with single notes rather than chords.

7. Teardrops On My Guitar
One of the many Taylor Swift guitar tutorial requests I received in the past. This one is a little bit older but still very popular. I show you a few different ways to play this tune with and without a capo.

8. Bonus: Easy Strumming Pattern
I thought I’d add this tutorial because it’s very popular on YouTube among guitar beginners. It shows you an easy strumming pattern that can be used on Teardrops on my Guitar and many other songs.
